12 Tasks - Creating a Rite of Passage

A new book by Jack Taylor and Shel Arensen on how to do the 12 Tasks with your kids.

How can parents help their preteens or ‘tweens’ on their road to adulthood? Children need to know what it means to be an adult with strong character and values. 12 Tasks will guide you on how to create a rite of passage for your emerging adult. The book tells the story of where 12 Tasks began 30 years ago among some families in Kenya. It traces the history and importance of rites of passage in traditional culture. Then it offers a clear how-to for designing your own version of 12 Tasks for your child – including ways to assess your child, choosing the tasks, completing and then celebrating at the end. 12 Tasks is not an easy journey, but it will help deepen your relationship as a parent with your child and it will help you guide your son or daughter in their transition toward adulthood.

This book was written by two fathers who are passionate about helping their children and grandchildren make a successful transition from being youth to being adults. 12 Tasks offers a personal and practical path for parents with the same passion to help their children on the journey to adulthood.

How do we Impact The Next Generations?

How do we Impact The Next Generations?

With the onslaught of social media, television and our education system, it seems like an overwhelming task for parents to have any influence on the upcoming generations. It seems that this is not a new phenomenon.  In Psalm 78 Asaph says “I will utter hidden things,...

Rwanda’s Urgency for The Young

Rwanda’s Urgency for The Young

I traveled to Rwanda in February-March 2023 with my son, Richard to do some leadership training. I was surprised by something I didn’t expect. The day after our arrival, in a church, a man stepped out and grabbed my shoulders. “I’ve been waiting to meet you,” he said...

Pathological Busyness

Pathological Busyness

I did something today I haven’t done for years. I sat in an easy chair in the lounge of a Rwandan B&B on a March morning soaking in the soothing warmth of sunshine, the ceaseless river of birdsong, the pleasant chatter of visiting community members, and I released...

When Life Gets Hard

When Life Gets Hard

Tondu, it’s interesting that you asked me to write to you about life in the hard times. I read through Psalm 63 this morning in my devotions and it is about exactly that. Life when things get hard. In fact, it seems a lot of the psalms I’ve read are about that. Life...
